內容簡介 An innovative analysis of the artistic poetics of the master of metaphysical painting.Through a selection of important works made during this master's career, this volume aims to conduct a critical revision of the artist's complex practice for the centenary of his so-called volte-face in 1919, the year he was criticised for leaving metaphysical painting (1910-1918) in favour of styles and techniques inspired by Classicism and the grand masters. Edited by the most important experts of De Chirico, The Face of Metaphysics promotes an innovative interpretation of the artist's oeuvre (both metaphysical, where the traditional confines of linear time and space are replaced by the doctrine of cyclical coexistence); an arrangement according to themes and not chronology underlines the idea that, despite the many changes in style, technique and subject, composition and colour tone, all of De Chirico's works may offer tangible visions of the intangible philosophical concept of Metaphysics, advanced by Nietzsche in the late 1800s: constant metaphysics. Divided into six sections (The Eternal Return; Metaphysical Exteriors; Metaphysical Protagonists; Metaphysical Interiors; Metaphysical nature; Metaphysics Encounters Tradition), this volume gathers around 90 works from some of the most prestigious private museums and collections in Italy and from the Fondazione de Chirico and also offers a rich core of archive documents including letters, period photos and exhibition catalogues.

作者介紹 Victoria Noel-JohnsonVictoria Noel-Johnson is an independent British art historian and curator, specialising in early 20th century Italian art. Her academic work and exhibitions investigate issues of identity and cultural history, as well as the reconstruction of past shows and important private and public art collections based on newly-discovered archival documentation. Between 2008-2017, Victoria acted as Curator of Fondazione Giorgio e Isa de Chirico (Rome) where she managed the Foundation's art collection and oversaw its international exhibition programme, including the organisation of shows in Russia, Japan and Brazil. During her tenure, she curated exhibitions in Italy and abroad and published widely in accompanying catalogues, publications and academic journals. She also coordinated and edited numerous publications such as La Casa-museo de Chirico (2009); Giorgio de Chirico. Catalogo ragionato dell'opera sacra (2012); and Alcestis. A Ferrara Love Story. Giorgio de Chirico and Antonia Bolognesi (2016). In late 2017, she published De Chirico and the United Kingdom (c. 1916-1978), a book that establishes the fundamental role that the UK played throughout the artist's career, as documented by over 550 documents sourced from 50 international archives (pp. 831).​Victoria has recently curated the revisionist exhibition Giorgio de Chirico: il volto della Metafisica (The Changing Face of Metaphysical Art), featuring c. 100 works executed throughout the artist's career (1910s - 1970s) (Palazzo Ducale, Genoa, 30 March - 7 July 2019).​Prior to her time at Fondazione de Chirico, she worked in London gaining experience in the secondary 20th century art market with both Christie's and Sotheby's , followed by a few years at the UK's oldest dealership, researching late 19th and early 20th century European artwork. Victoria holds a first-class degree in History of Art (MA Hons) from the University of Edinburgh and gained her Ph.D from the University of Glasgow with a thesis entitled Taking possession of the past: Giorgio de Chirico and the great masters. ​
